LGBTQ Therapy in Los Angeles
Finding a therapist who truly gets it can feel like an exhausting search. You might have sat across from someone who said the right words but made you feel like a case study rather than a person. Or you've avoided therapy altogether because you weren't sure you'd be safe enough to actually open up. I understand that, and I want you to know that this is a different kind of space.
I'm Rose Safran, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I work with LGBTQ individuals and couples who are ready to do real, meaningful work in a space where they never have to explain or justify who they are.
You Deserve a Therapist Who Understands Your World
The mental health field has not always been a welcoming place for LGBTQ people. Historically, conversion practices caused deep harm to generations of queer and trans individuals, and even well-meaning therapists can carry unconscious bias that makes sessions feel unsafe. The American Psychological Association has been clear that affirming care is not just preferable; it is the standard. In my practice, affirmation is not a checkbox. It is built into the foundation of how I work.
“Rose is an incredible therapist who guided me through overcoming struggles with relationships, intimacy, addiction, and work. She has been a tremendous support system and has helped me build the necessary tools to reach my full potential. Rose truly saved my life by helping me find sobriety, maturity, and peace in my life. I cannot recommend Rose enough to anyone seeking support & solutions to struggles related to family, relationships, work, addiction, etc.
”
“I have worked with Rose for several years and she has been an amazing help to me in so many areas of my life.
She is great at solving relationship issues, especially with my husband. She not only helped me solve my marital issues, she guided me when I was single and looking for a relationship. Without her guidance, I never would have even met my husband. I am happily married with a 5 year old son today. It was with Rose’s help and guidance that I was able to fulfill my dreams.”
What Brings LGBTQ Clients to Therapy
LGBTQ individuals face a specific set of stressors that can compound over time. Minority stress refers to the chronic, socially-based stress that comes from living in a world that does not always affirm your identity. This can show up as anxiety, depression, shame, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent sense that something is wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you.
Some of the things I commonly work through with LGBTQ clients include that coming out is rarely a single event. It is an ongoing process that can involve family rejection, grief, relief, fear, and joy all at once. If you are navigating coming out at any stage of life, whether you are 19 or 55, there is space for that here.
Relationship and family challenges are common. LGBTQ couples often face dynamics that most couples therapists are not trained to address. Same-sex couples, queer partnerships, and relationships that do not fit a traditional mold deserve a therapist who understands them without needing everything explained.
Identity exploration does not stop the moment someone comes out. Questions around gender identity, sexuality, transition, and how all of this fits into your broader sense of self are worth exploring at whatever pace feels right for you.
Trauma is disproportionately common in LGBTQ communities. Whether it is rooted in family rejection, religious harm, hate-related incidents, or the slow accumulation of microaggressions and invalidation, I work with clients who are carrying wounds that deserve real attention. You can learn more about how trauma affects LGBTQ people through organizations like The Trevor Project.
Internalized homophobia and transphobia are real and often go unrecognized. Growing up in a world that sends negative messages about who you are leaves a mark, even when you intellectually reject those messages. Therapy can help you locate where those messages are still living in your body and your choices.
My Approach to LGBTQ Affirming Therapy
I work with the whole person. That means I am interested in your relationships, your history, your body, your sense of meaning, and the particular texture of your life, not just the symptom that brought you in.
I do not assume anything about your identity, your relationship structure, your family, or what your goals are. Polyamorous relationships, non-binary identities, and trans experiences are welcomed here without hesitation or qualification. If you are questioning, that is welcome too. You do not need to have it figured out to begin.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness notes that LGBTQ adults are more than twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition. Access to affirming care is a significant factor in closing that gap. I take that seriously.
LGBTQ Couples Therapy
I also work with LGBTQ couples who are navigating conflict, communication breakdowns, intimacy challenges, or major life transitions. Queer relationships deserve a therapist who does not bring heteronormative assumptions into the room. Whether you are a same-sex couple, a trans and cisgender couple, or partners whose relationship structure does not fit a category, you are welcome here.
Who I Work With
I work with adults across the LGBTQ spectrum, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, questioning, transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and asexual individuals and couples. I offer both in-person sessions and telehealth, which means geography is rarely a barrier.
“Working with Rose altered the course of my life. She helped me develop boundaries, strengthen relationships, navigate my career, and communicate in an effective and empowered way. In short, she gave me a powerful set of tools to live a confident, happy life. I’ve referred several people to Rose, all of whom have had similar experiences working with her. I’m forever grateful that I found her!
”
“Rose is a truly incredible couples therapist! She has a special way of advocating for both you and your partner in a compassionate, fair, impartial way, while helping you remember what’s important (being happy, in love, and together!), and teaching you skills to strengthen your relationship over time (communication and compromise!). I highly recommend Rose!
